The Most Important Design Decisions You’ll Make in a Bathroom Renovation

A well-designed bathroom is one that makes getting ready feel like a trip to your hairdresser, a shower feels like a spa experience, and your daily routines feel elevated. Bathrooms are a space you use every single day in your home, yet are often overlooked when it comes to thoughtful design planning.

From layout to lighting, every design decision in your bathroom remodel should work together to create a cohesive design. That’s why today, we’re breaking down the most important bathroom design decisions to consider, drawing from our years of experience designing bathrooms across the North and South Carolina interior design scene.

Starting With the Layout

At Tailored Designs, we believe the foundation of a successful bathroom design starts with getting the layout right. Function always comes first, finishes come second. Why? A strong layout can support many different styles, but even the most beautiful finishes can’t fix a poorly planned space.

When it comes to choosing the layout, we dive into how you actually use your bathroom. We ask our clients questions like: How many people use this space? What time of day is it busiest? Do you prefer more storage, more open space, or both? Understanding your habits and priorities allows us to create a design that integrates best with your routine.

Deciding Shower, Tub, or Both?

Some clients can’t imagine a bathroom without a luxurious bathtub, while others prefer an expansive shower. It all comes down to what suits you best. One design choice we consider non-negotiable? A handheld shower head. They make everything easier – hair wash day, cleaning, kids, and pets. Of course, we pair this with a fixed shower head for a blend of functionality and style, and if a tub is part of your vision, we integrate it thoughtfully without compromising the overall layout or space.

Choosing the Right Vanity

We like to consider vanities as the centerpiece of the bathroom. It’s where everyone's eyes are drawn when they walk in. For that reason, every inch of the space should be intentionally designed to feel stunning. After all, no one loves staring at a vanity full of products. That’s why an important design decision is including plenty of drawers and customized pullouts, keeping the countertop clutter-free. If you use hot tools regularly, let’s create a drawer for them. If your skincare products need a fridge space, we’ll build it in.

Another vanity luxury is seated vanities. These are a bit less commonly requested lately, but we still recommend them when space allows. They add a touch of luxury and practicality for all your self-care and getting-ready routines.

The last piece of the vanity to consider is the right mirror. The mirror chosen makes all the difference. A common mistake we see on our initial home visits is mirrors that aren’t serving the bathroom the way they need. Scale, placement, and style all matter when selecting the perfect mirror. Your vanity should remain the centerpiece of the bathroom, but the mirror should complement it.

Adding Clever Storage Solutions

Storage can (and should) go beyond the vanity drawers, too. Some of the best design decisions involve incorporating clever, hidden, or multifunctional storage throughout the bathroom, especially those with smaller floor plans.

Think tasteful medicine cabinets, built-in niches for toiletries, pull-out shelves in linen closets, or shelving in the shower. These small touches keep your space organized and allow for your bathroom to feel functional, without displaying all your products on the surface.

The bathroom is where you often start and end your day. Those moments should leave you feeling peaceful, not stressed from the chaos and clutter. Curating the right storage solutions is a critical part of the bathroom design and renovation process.

Integrating Lighting That Elevates The Space

Getting ready in the morning sets the tone for your day. One thing that can not only ruin the getting-ready mood, but even your confidence for the day, too – bad lighting.

Layered lighting is the key to elevating the space, but it also ensures that it’s doing its job to keep the space lit. We love pairing sconces beside the mirrors and recessed can lighting overhead to create a glow around the room. That means no poorly cast shadows derailing your makeup routine, or dark corners that are hard to clean.

Selecting the Right Materials & Finishes

The finishes you select for your home need to be customized and intentional. Otherwise, a spa-like space can end up feeling more like a source of stress rather than a place to unwind.

It’s important to think about your comfort level with maintenance, cleaning, and usage to select the best material accordingly. For example, natural stone is beautiful, but it also needs to be sealed annually. If you aren't okay with that commitment, we choose an alternative that fits better. Beyond cleaning, safety and functionality are equally important. We carefully select tile finishes and textures to ensure floors aren’t overly slippery, taking into account our clients’ comfort levels and abilities.

Since these spaces are often filled with hard surfaces, we intentionally layer in softness and visual balance through textured wallpaper, window treatments, and curated artwork. This blends in more warmth, depth, and personality. We consider how every material works together. From countertops and cabinetry to fixtures, hardware, paint, wallpaper, and even the shower glass. We don’t just choose what looks good on a moodboard; we make informed decisions that combine aesthetics with functionality.
