Kitchens are the heart of the home. It's not just a place to cook, it's the place where you…
Gather to share stories and laughs with family
Sip a glass of wine with your significant other
Share all your favorite recipes
Chat over coffee with friends
Meal prep for a big week
And, of course, host even more beyond a family dinner here and there.
Creating a kitchen that not only serves as a space for cooking, but for socializing, too, is essential. Curating that space takes intentional planning, thoughtful design, and a construction team that knows how to implement it all.
Since we specialize in kitchens here at Tailored Designs, we wanted to share a few of our expert insights for creating a kitchen that values both cooking and entertaining. Let’s dive in.
Open-Concept Kitchen Layout for Effortless Flow
Seventeen years into the interior design scene, and we've learned Charlotte homeowners love open, airy spaces that connect the kitchen to the living and dining areas. We have heard some chatter about compartmentalizing spaces again but we are still seeing the majority of clients want more open spaces. By removing walls and/or widening entryways we can create a seamless flow, making it easy for guests to mingle while you cook.
We, of course, know that Thanksgiving is coming up, and if your family is anything like ours, you likely have a split between those watching the football games and those prepping for dinner. When you shift to an open-concept design, you can have this space flow together and get the best of both worlds. An open-concept also allows for natural light to move through the home, seamless spaces, and effortless hosting, making every gathering feel connected and inviting.
Take a closer look at this recent project we completed, The Gathering Place, where we shifted from a walled-off kitchen to a flowy open concept space.
Smart Kitchen Storage
True luxury is in the details. Custom cabinetry with built-in organizers, appliance garages, and deep drawers ensures that everything has its place. We like to think of everything from pull-out spice racks to hidden utensil drawers. These small details create a kitchen that feels luxurious, uncluttered, and tailored to your lifestyle, especially when hosting. With everything organized and out of sight, you can focus on entertaining guests, keeping the space both beautiful and functional, even during the dinner rush.
In this home, we incorporated several smart storage solutions, including a utensil pull out conveniently located next to the oven.
Defined Kitchen Zones for Functionality
We all want a stunning kitchen to show off to friends and family, but it has to be functional, too. During our onboarding process, we ask you to start thinking about how you actually use your kitchen. Like so many things in life, we often use our kitchens on autopilot. You're likely not always thinking about how you never have any space to chop veggies or store your pots and pans without an avalanche of them coming out at you. This is your sign to start thinking about what's working in your space, and what isn't.
Most of the time, the answer is distinct zones. We create defined zones for cooking, prepping, cleaning, and entertaining, ensuring every inch of your kitchen works smarter for you. This is customized to each of our clients. Sometimes it is an island with outlets because that's where their best work strikes them, or sometimes it's a butler's pantry where they can prep the apps for their guests without your entire kitchen being a wreck.
Here’s an example of how we designed kitchen zones for this Charlotte, NC client, tailored to how they use their space most.
Kitchen Island That Doubles as a Gathering Space
The island is everyone's favorite space in the kitchen. It's not just about creating the largest island you can; it’s about crafting the perfect spot for friends and family to pull up a barstool or cook together. It’s where you can do everything from homework help to baking holiday cookies, so it needs to wear many hats. It should offer ample space, integrated storage, and be a welcoming spot for everyone to gather.
We added this island to this space, with every detail in mind.
Layered Kitchen Lighting for Warmth and Ambiance
We love a statement light fixture, but in the kitchen, lighting should go beyond that. Layered lighting can add depth and functionality. Think under-cabinet lighting to help with meal prep, or dimmable recessed lighting to create the perfect mood for gatherings and dinner parties.
Thoughtful lighting placement takes a great kitchen to a luxurious one, built for hosting. Plus, it’s the perfect way to highlight all the stunning finishes and textures throughout your space.
In this kitchen, we added a series of cabinet lighting, island pendants, and recessed lighting to create a warm, elevated feel.
Timeless Kitchen Materials That Last
Again, you want your kitchen to be both beautiful and functional, and that all starts with what it's made out of. We always lean toward durable surfaces, timeless hardware, layered textures, and cohesive color palettes because we not only want to create a kitchen that's built around you, but one that's also built to last. After all, we all have that one guest who won’t use a coaster, and your kitchen should still look just as stunning the next morning.
This home features some of our favorite finishes: quartz countertops, brushed brass hardware, a mix of whites and wood tones, and handmade tile backsplash that ties it all together.
In Conclusion
Your kitchen isn’t just a place to cook, it’s where memories are made. By thoughtfully designing for all functions, you can create a space that makes cooking a breeze and hosts as seamlessly as it looks.
Whether it’s cozy mornings at the coffee corner, family chats at the island, or a full dinner party with friends, every detail comes together to create the space you won't want to leave. With the right planning, materials, and design expertise, your kitchen can truly be the heart of your home, built for cooking, hosting, and everything in between.
